Land of the Wind

Land of the Wind
32" x 44"
Oil
This may not be finished. Below are some of its stages. The goal is to have the feeling of the wind, the shadows of the clouds moving across the land, all suggested by strokes of color, not photographic likeness. When you are in places like this, you feel the power of the wind and I would like to paint what can be felt but not seen. So far, I am happy with the foreground, sky and butte but less sure about the middle ground.

I will let this go for awhile and see how it feels in a day or two. It is still a work in progress-- which is one reason I have been doing the digitals (below). They are fun to work with while an oil is drying between stages. If I had a studio, I could have several oils going at once.
As part of understanding how a real place and imagination go together in paintings, these are two photographs that I used as beginning inspiration. They are in the San Rafael Valley, Arizona.
